I'm having a problem with intermittent VPN disconnects ("Reason 422:
Lost contact with the security gateway..."). Using Windows XP on a
wireless HP laptop, and the Cisco VPN client downloaded from sonic.net,
I sometimes stay connected for hours, but sometimes for no longer than a
few minutes. Same problem at home and at various public hotspots.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Any clues much appreciated.

I often have had that problem. I have not resolved it. It seems to
be related to imperfect underlying connections, perhaps too slow
and/or dropping packets. I think it's a dumb reaction, but it happens
then. With better connections, it seems to stay up. Sometimes it
stays up with connections that seem bad or goes down with connections
that seem good. Often when it goes down with connections that seem
good, it might be related to Windows XP giving "network down" status
messages to its applications, which the VPN then acts upon by shutting
down its connection.

This is just theory.

My solution so far is to move to better connectivity.

Thanks for the response, Brad. It's good to at least know that it's not
only me.

I use the Sonic.net VPN service on my MacBook Pro almost daily. I've
never had problems as you describe, except when the wifi signal is weak
and/or there are other problems with the local network (as opposed to
the network on Sonic.net's end of things.)
